What to do straight after your dreads are done

Ok so you have a great head of dreads. What do you do now. Firstly relax it is pointless getting all het up about your dreads falling

apart. If you have done them properly and you have rubber bands on the base and roots they will be fine.

Wear a shower cap!

Best advice for any dreadhead new or old is to wear a shower cap when washing and not intending to wash you dreads this just

saves hassle dreads take ages to dry and saves the mechanical wear and tear of getting them wet and dry all the time.

To begin with you want to just leave them for about 2 weeks.

This will let everything settle and prepare your dreads for the first wash.

However saying this during this time you can palm roll then and roll them between your thumb and forefingers. Dreads love this and

cannot get enough of it. Remember Keep the rubber bands in!

First wash 2 weeks after getting them.

So its 2 weeks after you became a dreadhead, time to wash them! Contrary to other advise it is not necessary to wear tights on your

head or sing a special song etc!?

Get em nice and wet and using a liquid shampoo give em a good clean. Don' be too rough with them as they are fragile to

begin with. Saying this though they are not made of china! After you have got a good lather ( no lather with knotty boy shampoo

sorry!)  rinse out all the shampoo thoroughly. Now towel down your dreads and apply Dreadheads Locking accelerator. Try not to get the spray on your scalp as it can irritate.

NEXT

So you have washed your dreads for the first time. Nice one! when they are dryed the next step is to remove the elastic bands that have been in since the begining. To minimise trauma the best way is to get someone snip them out for you, if however no one is to hand you can just snap them out. You want to get in a routine now of washing them about once a week.

Waxing

Best time for waxing is the next day after washing and to do them perhaps once every two weeks. The best way is to get a good peanut m@m size blob of wax and apply down the length of the dread front and back. Then palm roll, massage the wax into the dreads.

Palm Rolling

Dreads love this and its simple. hold an individual dread in between your two palms and roll them back and forth. This helps tighten them and is extra effective dry, when wet from washing, and when wax is applied.

Finger Rolling

A Variation of palm rolling. Just more specific. Roll the dread by grasping between thumb and forefingers. This works especially well for smoothing bumps and kinks.

Root Rubbing

This part is V important. When your hair grows the hair that grows out your head grows normally i.e not dreaded. It is therefore important to perform maintenance on this hair to make it dread up. This needs to be done perhaps every month or two. Firstly shake lock peppa liberally over your dread roots.

Next take the dread in your thumb and forefinger and rub in a clockwise movement against your scalp. With newly forming dreads this will be harder to begin with as your dreads will be loose and lack 'weight'. After rubbing for a minute you will notice the straight hair is knotting up. The principle is rather like coiling rope. Next tighten the newly dreaded root by finger rolling at the root and repeat. Once it feel nice and tight apply some wax and then hold in place using a rubber band. Leave this in for again about two weeks.

Ok so i have done all that but i have loose hairs!

Crotchet hook

This is inevitable i'm afraid and harder to sort out. In our hairdressing the way we take care of this is by using a crotchet hook. This is a tiny hook at the end of shaft. The hook sort out loose hair by putting the hook through the body of the dread now hook the loose hair and pull it into the body of the dreads. It is hard to explain practice makes perfect.
